Smoky and Sweet Honey-Chipotle Baked Beans

These Honey-Chipotle Baked Beans strike a perfect balance between smoky, sweet, and slightly spicy flavors. This hearty side dish will complement your BBQ or picnic spread with its rich taste and easy preparation.

Prep Time: 15 minutes

Cook Time: 1 hour 10 minutes

Servings: 8 (serving size: about 1/2 cup)

Ingredients:

  • Cooking spray
  • 5 ounces (about ½ cup) shallots, finely minced
  • 1 tablespoon ground cumin
  • 1 tablespoon minced garlic
  • ½ cup tomato puree
  • 1 tablespoon canola oil
  • ¼ cup honey
  • ¼ cup cider vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons molasses
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 2 canned chipotle chiles in adobo sauce, seeded and finely chopped
  • 2 cans (28 ounces each) of baked beans

Instructions:

  1. Begin by preheating your oven to 300°F (150°C).
  2. In a large nonstick skillet, apply cooking spray and heat over medium-high heat. Add finely minced shallots and sauté them for roughly 4 minutes, or until they attain a delightful golden color.
  3. Introduce ground cumin and minced garlic, sautéing for an additional minute until the aromas are released.
  4. Add tomato puree and canola oil to the mixture, cooking for about 2 minutes while stirring continuously until it thickens slightly.
  5. Combine the honey, cider vinegar, molasses, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and the finely chopped chipotle chiles. Reduce the heat and allow it to simmer for 10 minutes, giving it an occasional stir.
  6. In a 2-quart baking dish, merge the baked beans with the shallot mixture.
  7. Place the dish in the preheated oven at 300°F (150°C) for 1 hour or until the beans become thick and develop a bubbly texture.
